Essential Job SkillsThe Education Center, in 2007 and enabled by a grant from the Daniels Fund, implemented an essential job skills program utilizing the WIN Career Solutions curriculum based on the ACT WorkKeys Nine Essential Skills Assessment Program. ACT began profiling jobs in US businesses over 10 years ago and through that process and after thousands of profiles, validated nine (9) essential job skills that employers confirmed as necessary in 85% of all US jobs. Those essential skills are as follows:Reading for InformationApplied MathematicsLocating InformationApplied TechnologyListening and WritingBusiness WritingObservationTeamworkWritingACT then developed an assessment tool, WorkKeys, that can evaluate and document an individual’s competency in each of the above essential skills and additionally the level of competency within each of those essential skillscategories. Each essential skill will have defined multiple levels of competency ranging from 1- 5, 6, or 7 levels. Each job profiled will have a defined level of competency that is deemed minimum for a successful job experience. All job profiles highly recommend a competency of Level 3 in those essential skills categories.Worldwide Interactive Network, a Tennessee-based company, developed a learning system, WIN Career Solutions, which specifically addresses each essentialskillscategory. The curriculum enriched with unique instructional process and technology prepares the learner through competency/mastery sequencing to raise competency levels in all categories. The WIN Career Solutions system also allows each learner to explore occupations and jobs, and then prescribe a learning goal that meets with the learner’s objectives. The WIN Career Solutions program is one of only two sanctioned by the ACT as an appropriate learning program that matches its WorkKeys Essential Skills thresholds. The Education Center offers this program to individuals for a fee and to businesses and organizations on a contracted basis. Please call The Education Center for pricing information. The Education Center, in positioning itself to be more effective in support of economic development, secured the WIN Career Solutions program and has made it available to businesses wishing to improve employee performance and advancement; for individuals wishing to prepare for job entry or career changes; and for its Archuleta County High School students in preparation for job entry, military service, and/or post-secondary study.Successful learners will be awarded the ACT National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) and/or the CareerReady Colorado Certificate(CRCC) at a Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum level. There is a cost to take the ACT WorkKeys assessments to validate essential skillscompetencies. These costs are dictated by the ACT and change periodically.
